Michael Zickella

Senior Co-President

Michael is a Senior from Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida studying Microbiology. He is a Research Assistant for the Department of Anesthesia at the University of Utah where he assists in researching the neural pathways responsible for chronic pain. He has also done clinical research for the Department of Gastroenterology at Mayo Clinic Florida where he helped evaluate esophageal motility in asthma patients. He is preparing for a career as a clinician-researcher. Michael believes that quality teamwork in practicing medicine and research is the key to accelerated success. He enjoys helping to connect people to lift the community as a whole towards better healthcare. When he’s not at work he’s most likely with his family. If he’s not there, then check the golf course..

Ellie Steeger

Junior Co-President

Ellie Steeger is a Junior from Loudoun County, VA studying Human Development. She is a research assistant for Professor Jeremy Yorgason where she helps research type 1 diabetes and it’s effects in communal coping. She is also currently working at Revere Health in the Orthopedics division as a medical scribe. She was the event coordinator for the Association of Future Female Physicians club as well as apart of the event coordinating committee for BYU Women of Science club here on campus. In her free time, she loves to volunteer for the BBBS program, Elevation Hospice, and as a crisis counselor for the National Crisis Text-line.

Derek Swanson

Committee Chair - Public Relations

Derek is a junior from Draper, Utah studying Exercise Science. He is currently working in Dr. Johnson’s Lab doing Ultrasound and MRI based research focusing on lower leg and foot muscles. He is a TA for PdBio 120 class every winter. Derek has worked at an old folk’s facility for over a year now being a CNA as well as a Med-Tech. He volunteers at Utah Valley Hospital as well as he is also a volunteer lacrosse coach for the American Fork youth lacrosse program. Derek got married in December of 2020 to his lovely wife Ashley and they love to go boating and visit lake powell as often as possible. Some of Derek’s hobbies are lacrosse, boating, fishing, hiking, and playing volleyball with friends.


Benjamin Latey

Committee Chair - Membership

Ben is a Junior from Valley Forge, Pennsylvania and will be graduating in 2 years with a Bachelors degree in Neuroscience. He currently works in Professor Steffensen’s neuroscience lab researching addiction pathways in the brain. He also works as an Assistant Project Manager in BYU Independent Study’s marketing team, which he has been a part of for the past year and a half. Ben volunteers at the Utah Valley Hospital as an OR volunteer and helped direct volunteers for the ‘Adopt-A-Grandparent’ initiative in Rexburg, Idaho. When he’s not at school or work, Ben usually spends his time playing basketball, practicing violin, and cooking. He’s excited to serve the club and looks forward to this year!


Boston Andersen

Committee Chair - Student Experiences

Boston is a Junior from Nashville, TN studying Cell Biology and Physiology.  Boston works in Dr. Hyldahl’s lab, in the Exercise Science Department, studying factors that affect muscle regeneration.  He has also conducted research for SDP Oncology, a Japanese pharmaceuticals company that innovates and produces cancer treatment drugs.  He also volunteers as a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) and is the Executive Director for the Y-Serve Group Scenic View.  Boston served a mission in Japan, Sapporo.  In his free time, he enjoys snowboarding, riding dirt bikes, and going to the lake.  If you have questions about internship opportunities or clinical experience, please reach out to him! 

Trevor Murphy

Committee Chair - Student Experiences

Trevor is a Senior from Idaho Falls, Idaho studying Bioinformatics. He is a Research Assistant in the NDFS department and is currently running a project analyzing the pathway of the myotoxic effect of anesthesia through the electron transport chain. He also works as an RA in the Pre-Professional Advising Center analyzing the factors that lead to better medical school applications. Trevor loves serving and runs the Tutoring program on campus. When he isn’t in a dark corner of the library coding (lol), he loves trail-running, fly fishing, and archery.
